Saturday, I turned 37 years old.  (Yeah, sounds shockingly close to 40.)  In the 10 or so days prior to my 37th birthday, I...

...got my first speeding ticket in 15 years and was informed by the Maryland state trooper who caught me doing 60 in a 40 (hey, it's a very big country road that should at least be 45 mph - really) that "there's not a road in St. Mary's County with a speed limit of 60 miles an hour."  But at least the generous trooper in mirrored sunglasses only ticketed me for 49 in a 40 - this time.  But never being able to go above 55 mph?!  Damn you, Texas, for your interstate highways and straight country roads - you're going to get me in trouble down here in southern Maryland!

...fell going down our stairs and bounced so hard I actually have a vague memory of being airborne.  My tailbone is still recovering.

...corresponded with faculty at two local colleges about pre-reqs I need to complete before enrolling in an intensive, year-long MAT (Master in the Arts of Teaching) starting summer 2012.

...marked one year since our last miscarriage, the second in under a year.  It's been a very quiet year on that front.  I know many of you wish I could tell you otherwise, but I've felt for awhile now that my life is not like a movie where this experience will be wrapped up all neatly like a sad, but short, side story to be quickly forgotten in the larger picture.  Of course, I don't know how it fits (God, I really don't know), but I'm certain it's pivotal.

The birthday itself was quiet but ended well.  Jeremy had to work, so Gideon and I "went to town" - library and grocery store.  Jeremy got home earlier than expected, carrying an even more unexpected birthday gift - a Kitchen Aid mixer.  We tried a new local Chinese place for dinner and had homemade (a team of three effort) red velvet cupcakes at home for dessert.  We plan to make an overnight excursion to D.C. next weekend.

As a belated birthday gift, I'd like everyone who reads this to leave a comment (even if it's six months from now), especially you blog-stalkers.  I'm not looking for birthday wishes, but just really want to know who my audience is out there, since I have only about three regular commenters and a handful of people who tell me they read, but never take the time to let me know.   Sometimes a girl just needs a little encouragement.

And, if you need some encouragement, well, I might just figure out one of those random name drawing thingies and reward one commenter with a little something from my sewing project stash.

Thanks for reading!

  1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The KitchenAid mixer sounds extremely cool. Bummer about the speeding ticket so close to your birthday. Can't wait to hear about DC.

  2. Happy Birthday, Amy!!! You know I'm reading! So I need to hear more about this MAT you're thinking about doing. Sounds interesting.

Btw, I can so relate to this sentence:
I know many of you wish I could tell you otherwise, but I've felt for awhile now that my life is not like a movie where this experience will be wrapped up all neatly like a sad, but short, side story to be quickly forgotten in the larger picture.

It's hard sometimes to be the person whose life doesn't have that neat ending, instead you carry dangling sorrows and unanswered questions. I too feel that's been my story. And I long for the friends who can walk alongside me in that. Sometimes they are few and far between.

I hope 37 is a great year for you.

  3. Happy 37th! I'm here reading and always look forward to what you have to say. I hope your tailbone is healing - I fell getting out of the shower at summer camp as a kid, and mine still hurts like hell every once in a while.

Have a great trip to DC :)

  5. Happy birthday, Amy! I too was pleasantly surprised with a KitchenAid blender at Christmas... and have really enjoyed it. Its a beast to keep on the counter, but so handy. I have an easy whole wheat bread recipe, that you can make the dough in it, if you're interested.

Intrigued by the MAT - way to keep on being a learner!

You are missed down here in the land of "interstate highways and straight country roads." :)

  6. Happy Belated Birthday! Just like I said, I do love reading your posts even though I'm horrible at email!

You are missed a lot and I hope this year brings what you are wishing for and even better, the things you didn't even know you wished for until they've arrived!

  7. Glad your birthday ended even better than you had expected- I'm excited you got the kitchen aid and slightly jealous as well! I'm curious to see if you really enjoy using it to know whether or not I actually need one.

Next time we talk I want to hear about the MAT program as well- that sounds like something that you would really enjoy.

Sorry I am not good about commenting...I am always reading though.

  8. Happy Birthday! I recently got a Kitchen Aide mixer too, and LOVE it! I have been on to Angel Food cake recently...something I thought I didn't like, but it is so easy, and sort of magical the way the egg whites turn into this cloud of beautiful, shiny, sweetness, with that mixer. I really encourage you to try it. We made one yesterday and added red food coloring for a pink V-Day cake!

  9. Happy Birthday, cousin! You already know that I regularly stalk your blog. Sorry about the ticket. I got one last summer while my dad was in the hospital. I was driving my mom's mini van. Really? A speeding ticket in a mini van. Pitiful!

I got a Kitchen Aide mixer for my birthday last year. I love it. It makes me feel like a baker, even though I'm not. Mine is red, what color is yours?

Hey, 37 sounds like a spring chicken to me! Wait until you are looking 50 straight in the face. Gag! Ah, well . . . better than the alternative. My boss says any day above ground is a good day. True!

  10. Happy belated birthday! I'm a new-comer to your blog. I found you through Valerie at http://bohemianseason.blogspot.com/, whom I'm taking an online course "Declaration of you".

I just wanted to reach out and say sorry about your miscarriages. My heart aches every time I hear a story like that. I have gone through a second one myself two weeks ago and it's heart breaking. We also have a toddler son, he is 3 years old and I always imagined having a bigger family, but it just doesn't seem to be in our cards. We tried for so long and then had to to IVF with our first one, and this time around we had one embryo left, so only that one shot.

Anyways, I just wanted to say hello and "bore" you with my story. ;-D

    Take care.

  11. I laughed hard at your speeding ticket story. Craig totally agrees with you. Miss you! Wish you were here in Korea with me.

  12. Happy belated Birthday Amy! I treasure your friendship and love that we can pick up right where we left off when we see each other. It seems just like yesterday (not TWENTY years ago) we were highlighting the inappropriate words in our Spanish/English dictionaries in Mrs. Dorn's Spanish IV class. :)

Here's to making the downhill slide towards 4-0 together!
