Look what I made!

The hat, not the boy (well, I helped make the boy, too, and am pretty proud of him, as well - but you know that already).

In the spring, I decided I would knit Gideon's hat for this winter and after some searching and help from my local yarn shop, I landed upon this pattern:  Almost-Famous Luggy Bonnet, full pattern available in Melanie Falick's Weekend Knitting.  It's "almost famous" because it almost appeared in the first Harry Potter movie (when baby Harry is left on his aunt and uncle's doorstep at the beginning of the movie).  Pride and Joy, the British knitwear company that made the luggy bonnet, also created Ron Weasley's R sweater that did appear in the movie.

The yarn is 100% superwash merino wool, which means it can be machine washed and dried.  I found it on KnitPicks.com.  It's their Swish DK line and all 5 colors Gideon picked out for himself added up to less than $20.

I must admit to shortcutting the edging.  It required 3 different crochet stitches and I knew 0 crochet stitches.  At the yarn shop, the saleslady demonstrated a simple single crochet stitch, and I thought it more than adequate for providing a finished edge.  Plus, being so close to finishing the project (only my second), I didn't get want to get hung up or bogged down at the end.  Especially, because I now have this tiny, adorable little project on my mind (all cute, but I'm going for the simple rolled-brim hat):

My first attempt with "knitting in the round" and DPNs (double-pointed needles).  Updates to come...

  3. Wow. I'm so impressed. I was just thinking about you recently and wondering if you've continued knitting. You've really outdone yourself here. Can't wait to see the new little baby hat too.
