Memorial Day Weekend

We took a trip this weekend - just as we did last Memorial Day weekend.  This time to Philadelphia.  The reservations had been made 3 months ago after an unexpectedly successful, enjoyable, spur-of-the-moment trip to Ocean City for Presidents' Day weekend.  Graham wasn't even two months old yet, but I remember telling the owners of the bed-and-breakfast we made reservations at that we would be bringing a 5-year-old and a 5-month-old.  Graham had slept well that weekend, even having his first 6-hour stretch overnight and napping for two hours one afternoon, even as the other three of us milled around the room we shared with him.

This was his third trip away from home.  His second trip was two months ago, for a spring break getaway to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Again, he fell asleep easily for naps and usually didn't wake until after 7 in the morning.

But there's a big difference between 2- and 3- months and 5-months and this weekend, Graham refused to nap in the pack-n-play.  He'd fall asleep on his own in it in the evening for bedtime, but whether put in asleep or awake, he was quickly screaming during the day.

So we moved instead.  He might not fall asleep in the stroller (he spent almost 3 hours in it Sunday morning when we walked to, from, and around the Philadelphia zoo), but if he's outside and moving, he stays (mostly) happy - or at least zoned.

Granted, we have been somewhat out of sorts even at home, having spent the previous two weeks battling an upper respiratory infection that migrated to his lungs, in large part with me acting as a single parent.  They're not calling it asthma now, but reactive airway disease.  He seems to be almost back to normal - just some coughing, so we'll try now to remember what "normal" is - just in time for it to change, as summer begins for us week after next (school ends Friday, then Gideon will have a summer camp at school with the same hours as school).

  1. So you've been posting all this time and I missed it? I really enjoyed the trip recap and pictures, but confess to sighing and smiling at the last one. Love the reflection of Graham beside Gideon. The sight of sleeping kids makes my heart get melty soft.
